LARGE POWER USAGE
KBB Smartways Specialises in Revenue Enhancement for the Municipalities. Our Strategies allow for close monitoring of tampering and bypassing of meters.
Event such as opening of the meter cover, removal of power supply and reverse energy readings trigger alerts enabling the dispatch of inspections and audits. Our methods use three key methods of doing audits.
- We dispatch an electrician to check and remove bypassed meters. After work has been completed, we always seal our meters. During this process we also has a job card which is filled in by our technician.
- We have a team of Auditors who only visit and verify the meters done and conduct their own report of the installation and seal numbers.
- The third Data Analyst will receive the municipality bills for each customer and the monthly report from the AMR system which will introduced for online reading.
AUDIT
The finding of Audit Local Municipality. Upon arrival of the technical team has identified that some meters require modems and come meters require replacements as the meters are out of calibration.
SITE VISIT TO THE METERS
The arrival of technical team, they conducted a diagnosis on the meters in verifying that the meter is working correctly and meter settings. Also included but limited to physical inspection of the meters and wiring of the meters to ensure that the meters are correctly connected.
The scope of work for the audit was as follows:
LPU Metering Overview
A physical meter audit is an effective approach to facilitate and produce a systematic exercise of analysing the engineering and billing status of the meters that are registered and billed by the municipality on their database. It provides reliable information about each meter and the billing status of each meter by the municipality to provide confidence and certainty of the billing data, to enable the generation of accurate electricity bills to the customers from the municipality.
APPROACH
Interrogation of Customer Bills
KBB Smartways data analyst have conducted a detailed study on the customer bills against the Tariff bills approved by NERSA and discovered that Customers are not billed according to the correct billing structure.
Eskom is one of the few remaining vertically integrated utilities connected to the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP) through an interconnected grid, which serves to support grid stability. Eskom relies on SADC members to maintain sufficient and reliable transmission grids in their countries.2022/ 2023 Annual Price Increase
The tariff increase as approved by the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) to be applied to the tariff charges for Eskom direct customers and for the Eskom tariffs applicable to local authorities (municipal) is as follows:
Customer category Percentage increase
Local authority tariffs charges: 1 July 2022-30 June 2023 8,61
Eskom direct customers: 1 April 2022- 31 March 2023:
All tariff charges except the affordability subsidy charge 9.61
Affordability subsidy charge 14,26
Also important to note that there is no tariff structural adjustments for 2022/23.
Water Meters
KBB Smartways has embarked on a journey to move conventional meters to smart prepaid meters in and around South Africa. We have conducted research in the local areas and in our analysis we have found that meters that water meters in most areas have been vandalised, tampered if not technical fault. The challenges that are faced in the local areas in South Africa lead local municipalities in South Africa to pay a high water bill.
Challenges in local municipalities:
- Vandalism and theft of structure
- Old water infrastructure
- Intermittent water supply resulting in high lying areas not receiving water through the network
- High water losses
- Regular breakdown and high maintenance
- Insufficient water storage capacity in some water distribution areas
KBB Smartways has came with a solution to assist the municipalities in increasing their revenue in water management as well as give the residents the accurate reading regarding their water consumption, to do so we have installed prepaid water meters in the local areas we have worked in. KBB Smartways has replaced a number of Displacement Water Meters as most of them were out of calibration or the measuring device has stopped reading making it difficult for the municipality to give the correct readings to the customer.
Advantages of smart prepaid water meters
- The cost is much lower than the others, around half cost.
- The system is easy to cooperate, it’s no related with remote monitoring, more stable
- Easy for end user to use, no need other device to cooperate with the meter to use.
- Don’t need extra data transmission cost
- Remote reading can be done on line on the management system
- Not easily tampered
- We can track where there is a leakage
Prepaid Water Meter Audit
Our prepaid water meter system consists of a prepaid water meter, meter reader and management software. The water meter adopts a one-meter one-card system. Simply install the software on your computer and the card reader is connected to the computer via the USB interface to transfer data to the SIM card. We connect the SIM card in the resident’s water meter to the management centre to pay the fee. After the payment is successful, the card is placed close to the water meter. After the card is successfully read, the water can be used.
Water Treatment
What is Water Purification?
Water purification is a process where water impurities, such as contaminants, inorganic compounds or bacteria are removed from the water, leaving it in a purer state. Most of the time, the source water for most laboratory and clinical applications is tap water. With water purification technologies this is processed to the required water type.
Why is Purifying Water Important?
It is important that impurities are removed and additional contamination is managed effectively. If source water is used in applications with no modifications to its condition, then the impurities are capable of influencing the data obtained in these applications. This can render the results invalid and unusable.
What does Water Purification Allow you to Remove?
In its natural state, there are many substances that can be found in water. These include:
• Bacteria and Micro-organisms
• Organic and Inorganic compounds
• Particulates
• Dissolved Gases
